Since this came out in the local video store, it has been rented out solid. 4 rows of it, every copy gone. I thought maybe it hasn't been released yet and they were making room for it. Nope, it's been out the entire time. I managed to get one copy when the clerk dug through dropslot bin. This movie is clearly popular, and after watching it, I'm not entirely sure why.
(Warning: Major spoilers ahead!)
After watching it, there are some questions left to ask. First of all, why the hell would the scientist want to bring back Zachary? The kid died after killing his mother, setting the place on fire, and dying in the fire himself. Yet the scientist thinks of his hellish offspring as a beloved son which he lost and loved so dearly. Clearly, this scientist is insane. That kid belongs in Doom 3.
Second of all, everything's done, and the family moves to another location, trying to start a new life. Did they expect the kid's split personality disorder to just dissapear? Well, the movie hints it hasn't, but clearly, this kid is a danger to everybody around him, including himself. Wouldn't you try to do something about it?
Third, they did apparently work to do something about it (they mention new doctors.) How long would it take any medical professional to figure out what happened here? Also, this family moved away to a small town to have this re-kid. Just like that, packed up, gone. You don't think that any of their family or friends would manage to find them, or be looking for them? Old work colleagues, Jesse's art clients, etc?
.....
Ignoring the pitfalls of the story, it's not a terrible thriller. It has lots of good jumpy moments, and going to the kitchen to get a snack after the movie, I feared that freaky little bastard would be standing there when I turned on the light.
