Anarchist Cookbook

Director: Jordan Susman
Year: 2002
Rating: starstarstarstar

When I was at imdb getting the name of the director for this movie, I read a comment posted by one of the users:

"It's like a made for TV version of Fight Club."

I don't necessarily agree with this viewpoint. I can clearly see where there are similarities in terms of events that happen in both movies. Both have a relatively moral character that meets somebody way off the rails, and before they know it - they are part of something that not only can't be stopped - it's really, really wrong. But these similarities end at their face value - they are only literal similarities. Idealistically, these are two different movies.

It's not like Fight Club invented the basic social situation both movies present to their audience - that situation being when you look around you and realize, "This is way out of my league. What am I doing with myself? Why am I here with these people?" I think a lot of people have at one point or another encountered this during their youth, to whatever extremes.

The difference between the two is by the end of the movie. Where "The Anarchist Cookbook" remained with and resolved the social can of worms it opened, Fight Club turned into a psychological thriller fiasco. Fight Club, as good as it was, was simply about Fight Club.

You get the point. Take it or leave it. Bottom line this movie was fun to watch, and the director's commentary is possibly funner. "They aren't wearing seatbelts! They'll probably give us an R rating just for that! ... we're fucked!"

ha ha ha.
