Photoshop CS3 crashes randomly when moving objects, etc.

October 29th, 2007

As I mentioned in the previous article, I had problems with Photoshop CS3 randomly crashing. Most often this happened when moving layers around, or dragging objects between documents. The common link: All involved dragging with the mouse. And more specifically than that: The Microsoft Mouse with Intellipoint drivers.

Yep... Turns out that Photoshop CS3 (original release) has a problem with the Microsoft Intellipoint mouse drivers. The solution right now seems to be to uninstall the Intellipoint driver and use the default windows driver instead.  I tried this and it does seem to work - Photoshop is no longer crashing on me.

Of course, the downfall is your mouse may lose extra functionality (e.g. back/forward/zoom buttons, etc.), but for me this wasn't an issue because I never use those anyway. The one thing I do miss is smooth scrolling with the scroll wheel, but hey... being able to do my job is more important to me.

I'm not too worried though, I'm sure Adobe (or Microsoft) will release a patch soon enough and allow me to reinstall the Intellipoint drivers again.
