How to fix DVD Shrink 3.2 when left side is flickering and app doesn't work
June 10th, 2007
It seems after I upgraded to SATA RAID with a mirror config (NVRAID controller), DVD Shrink 3.2 doesn't work. The left side of DVD Shrink flickers wildly and the application is unresponsive. It uses 40-50% CPU and you can only close it using the Task Manager.Today I was messing around to try and find the cause, and decided to check the program settings in the registry. I found a registry key:
HKEY_USERS\<your user key>\Software\DVD Shrink\DVD Shrink 3.2\Preferences\
I actually found this key by using Find (CTRL-F) and searching only the Keys for 'Shrink'. It popped up after a couple of iterations.
My first thought was maybe the default paths may be causing the problem (since my drives have been reconfigured, etc.) So I cleared 'ImportFolder', 'OpenISOFile', and 'TargetFolder' and tried starting the application. No luck.
Then I thought... the flickering panel almost looks like its squashed.. you can see a header showing up ... almost looks like a math problem in the app for resizing the controls. So I decided to play with the frame_* settings - starting with frame_high. The original setting was 760 pixels or something, so I changed it to 500 (decimal) just to see what happens.
VIOLA! My hunch was right - It fixed the flicker problem. I was able to start & use the app normally. I resized the window a bit and closed it, and the values in the registry updated accordingly. The frame_* values store the last window position & size, and I think somehow a bad value gets in there and makes the app go nuts.
Another user in a forum somewhere posted that they solved the problem by reinstalling the app, which makes sense because this registry value would probably be reset when the app is installed.
What I did was exported the registry key after fixing it and stored the merge file in the DVD Shrink program folder. Next time I get the flicker problem, I'll just merge the key into the registry to reset the settings & fix it.
