Open Source Desktop Recording Software - CamStudio
December 15th, 2006
If you want to do some software demos or online training videos on the cheap, you should check out CamStudio. This open source program can record audio and video from your desktop, and supports recording to AVI and Flash formats. It can record audio from a microphone and system sounds playing through your speakers. Screen recording can be full-screen, or limited to a fixed or floating region with auto-pan to follow your cursor. Other features include the ability to create captions and labels, with predefined layouts that can be switched using a hotkey, and the ability to highlight the mouse cursor. CamStudio has its own lossless desktop recording codec, designed for high-speed capture of full-screen movement (source also provided, of course.)
The software is actually very similar in features & functionality to TechSmith's CamTasia Studio, another desktop recording application which is quite powerful. CamStudio does not include the editing suite which is provided in the Techsmith product, but for a simple demo you can't go wrong getting this application for free!
