BF2 Quits to Desktop in Multiplayer and not Single Player
December 31st, 2005
If you have had Battlefield 2 (or the Special Forces Expansion) quit to the desktop when you get the "Joining Server" screen, but works perfectly fine in Single Player, then it's most likely your firewall settings - The ports that BF2 needs to play online are probably being blocked by your firewall. Why it crashes to the desktop instead of popping up a connection error message is a bit of a mystery, but probably something that will be fixed in a future patch. Either way, opening the ports solves the problem.
Which ports? Look on Page 19 of your BF2 manual.. there is an Internet Issues section which lists the ports you need to open to play BF2. You need to open these ports on any firewall you run (software or hardware or both).

Hey maybe you could help me. I was wondering why when I play BF2, I get hit by someone with maybe only 3 or 4 bullets and I fire about 10 rounds into them and they dont die and I do. Is there a trick to that?
